Gary Gibson (32) leads a pack of riders in a WERA C Production race at Grattan in June of 1987. A chain reaction is about to happen the instant after this photo was taken. Notice Chris Corven (directly behind bike No. 111) has taken an extremely tight line into the right-hander. If you look closely you can tell that Corven has realized his line is going to intersect with the rest of the pack as he exits the turn. He’s already on the front brake and just a fraction of a second later he goes down taking Charles Buse (39) and another rider, not yet in the frame, with him. Miraculously Terry Hampton (in the white helmet) and Ed Key (34) somehow managed to avoid the crashing Corven. The photographer (me) was close enough on the outside of the track that I had to bail right after capturing this image, thus no crash sequence.

Great Stuff!! Glad you got out of the way!

Steve
I wish I’d been brave enough to try to take a few shots of the crash before running away like a girly-man. I guess I had a high level of self-preservation.
