Yamaha TD-1Bs dominated the race that year with the eight of the top-10 finishers on Yamahas.

The Yamaha camp was a little worried early in the week when the Suzukis of Dick Mann, Dan Haaby and Dick Hammer showed good speed. But the Suzukis proofed unreliable and it was a Yamaha day.

The highest finishing non-Yamaha was Roger Reiman, who was fifth on a Harley-Davidson Sprint.

Schafer went on to finish 10th.

The race was won by Robert Winters from Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Robert’s brother was off-road great Leroy Winters.
