Floridians Mark Chin (No. 77) and Michael Barnes (No. 33), both on Yamaha OW01s, head a group of riders in the Mid-Ohio AMA Superbike event in August of 1990. I’m guessing this was a heat race based on the fact that Chin finished sixth in the first heat just ahead of Barnes in seventh. I’m not 100 percent sure who the riders are behind Chin and Barnes. I’m pretty certain No. 27 is Barry Burke, but I have no clue on No. 23. I believe that was Doug Polen’s number, but if I remember correctly, he was off racing in Japan, so perhaps the AMA reassigned the number to another rider. I’m going to take a wild guess and say that No. 23 might be Kevin Erion racing a Two Brothers Honda RC30. If it is I think that’s a pretty rare capture, because I don’t believe Erion raced in too many Superbike races. If anyone knows for sure who riders No. 27 and No. 23 are please leave a comment.

I think you are right, #23 has the same helmet and leathers + knee sliders as this guy:

and Barry Burke used to be the fast guy at wilow when I was a novice and he always wore an Arai helmet like that and Z Leathers. I also believe at Willow he was # 72?

Not saying i know for sure Larry but maybe i can help you narrow it down. My thoughts are that #23 is not Erion. I have plenty of pics of him from Daytona of 1990 on his Hawk & i do remember that his leathers & helmet stayed consistent throughout the year because he had an outside of the industry sponsor that had a peculiar name (Kodiak?). I went & checked the 3×5 pics I have & it just doesn’t look like him, including the helmet. Additionally, i have pics of an Erion RC30 with the body off & it has bare aluminum fork legs. Also, if it makes a difference, with Erion’s budget & market-concious attitude, he would have popped for Henry The Brush numbers. That #23 doesn’t look like Henry’s work. It just doesn’t add up. Hope that helps. There was a British guy that went to many of the AMA events that year that raced an RC30. Maybe it was him.
