Barcia Wins Dave Coombs Sr. East/West Shootout

SALT LAKE CITY (May 5, 2012) – Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., won his fourth Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, race tonight in front of a sold-out crowd of 39,509 at Sam Boyd Stadium. After leading wire-to-wire, GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia, of Ochlocknee, Ga., won the final stop of the Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class Championship. Barcia’s teammate Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., also led all 15 laps of the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class Main Event, winning his fifth race of the season.

MotoConcepts’ Mike Alessi, of Hilliard, Fla., captured the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award to start the Supercross Class Main Event. Dungey didn’t wait long to make his move on Alessi to take the lead on Lap 1. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Brett Metcalfe, of Lake Elsinore, Calif., moved into second place on Lap 2, passing Alessi, and on the following lap, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, found his way into third place.

Weimer advanced into second place on Lap 6, while JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha Davi Millsaps secured third place and set his sights on Weimer. Weimer and Millsaps mixed it up on Lap 7, trading places for second place with Weimer holding the position. Millsaps finally made the pass on Weimer on Lap 10 and rode to a second place finish. Dungey won with an 8 second margin of victory and Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, finished third.

Millsaps finished second in the season point standings and Dungey finished third.

“After the Heat Race, we made a change to the bike that really helped out in the Main Event,” said Dungey. “The track was hard-packed tonight and a little tough. I am really happy that I could get this win for the KTM team.”

Barcia capped off his championship-winning Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class season by winning the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award before leading all 15 laps of the Main Event en route to his sixth victory of the season. Barcia clinched the championship earlier this year at the New Orleans stop.

Behind Barcia, Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, of Murrieta, Calif., assumed the second-place position with Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett, of Grand Terrance, Calif., in tow, where they would finish.

Following Barcia’s win, he made the announcement that he will ride for the Team Honda Muscle Milk squad next year, and the first time he will race for the new team will be at the Monster Energy Cup at Sam Boyd Stadium on October 20.

“This is a dream come true, and I am looking forward to racing for Team Honda Muscle Milk,” said Barcia. “I am happy to close out the season with a win; the track was difficult for me out there, but I was able to keep it together.”

Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., opened the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class Main Event by placing his GEICO Honda across the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot line with Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Martin Davalos, of Cairo, Ga., and his teammate Jason Anderson, of Edgewood, N.M., following in second and third, respectively.

On Lap 3, Anderson moved into third place, passing Davalos, but moments later made a mistake that allowed Davalos to take back second place and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson to move into third. Wilson passed Davalos on Lap 5 to take over the number-two position. GIECO Honda’s Wil Hahn, of Decatur, Texas moved around Davalos on Lap 11. Wilson finished second and Hahn finished third.

“This shows that GEICO Honda has done a great job this year with us winning both Supercross Lites Class titles and Wil [Hahn] finishing third tonight,” said Tomac.

The dominant performance by the GEICO Honda team set the stage for the 10 lap Dave Coombs Sr. East/West Shootout. Once again, Barcia won the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award, and he was trailed by Davalos and Tomac.

On Lap 3 Davalos took advantage of a mistake by Barcia to move into the lead. Two laps later, both Barcia and Tomac moved around Davalos. Barcia was able to hold off the hard charging Tomac for the win. Tomac finished second and Davalos was third.

Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton won the second annual Brett Michaels Rock Hard-Ride Hard Award and received a $10,000 bonus.

Sonoma, CA (May 5, 2012) – LTD Racing teammates Huntley Nash and David Gaviria faced a number of challenges in this weekend’s AMA Pro Daytona SportBike race but the duo managed to fight hard at Infineon Raceway and show the racer’s spirit inside them.

Nash, after running inside the top ten in the Road Atlanta sessions and having his best weekend in the Daytona SportBike class last time out, knew he’d have a tougher time at one of his least favorite tracks. The Georgian persevered and was able to rally and earn a top 15 in Saturday’s race, improving two positions off his qualifying spot.

“I settled in and tried to get some laps and take advantage of the track time,” said Nash. “Every little bit counts when you’re a young rider learning. I was able to do my best lap towards the end and make up a spot. We got some points and some seat time. Our goal is to make some changes for the morning warm-up and try to keep going forward. I figured out a few things.”

David Gaviria’s weekend was one of the strangest on record. Last year’s SuperSport West champion ended up taking a provisional start after mechanical issues and a crash left him with very little track time in DSB practice and qualifying.

“It was like a nightmare,” said David of his bad luck. “It’s the first time I have had this kind of weekend before. Sometimes everything goes wrong and sometimes everything goes well. You have to be positive all the time. If you are not positive, it only gets worse.”

A first lap crash left David and the team scrambling during the red flag to get his machine repaired. David was able to rejoin the race then complete the 22 laps to finish the contest.

“I thought this cannot be happening. After the crash, I tried to see if anyone was hurt and then I picked my bike up and tried to get it back to the pits,” said Gaviria. “The bike was pretty bad but I made it back. The team did a good job reconstructing the bike. I appreciate the job all the guys did and I’m grateful to the Pegram Racing team for helping us. After the racing started, I was the last rider so I tried to learn the track, the braking zones. I felt I could go faster but I told myself I needed to relax and ride. I will try some changes in the morning.”

Huntley and David get one more shot at Infineon Raceway on Sunday.

Team M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby collected another strong top-five finish to further solidify his status as a serious AMA Pro Daytona SportBike title contender on Saturday at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA.

Westby’s recent efforts to improve his starts paid off, as he immediately slotted his GSX-R600 with the lead group from his seventh position spot on the second row.

Westby made a move to claim fourth and promptly turned his attention to defending the position as the top three had already broken free at the front.

The Oklahoma native was unflappable under heavy pressure and quickly counterattacked an attempt to steal fourth away from him two laps from the end.

The fourth place result combined with his earlier second, third, and fifth see Westby currently ranked second in the Daytona SportBike title fight on 80 points.

“I’ve been working on the start after Atlanta and it went all right. I got off the line on the restart pretty well but I had to follow the lines of the riders in front of me. The guys up front got away so I ended up trying to hold onto fourth and protect the position. On the second to last lap a move was made but I got him right back.

“It was a good result for the points. The goal is no zeroes and to keep finishing up front and getting faster.”

SuzukiScoopFans SportbikeTrackGear.com M4 Suzuki’s Elena Myers, who’s still mending from post-Daytona wrist surgery, took part in Saturday’s AMA Pro SuperSport race.

Myers qualified 14th among the 54-deep field around the physically demanding circuit. In the race she moved up as high as eighth before ultimately settling down in 13th at her home circuit where she famously claimed a historic victory two years ago.

Team Venezuela’s Robertino Pietri and M4 Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich flew in formation for much of the day’s 22-lap AMA Pro Superbike contest. The two qualified in 13th (Pietri) and 15th (Ulrich) and raced together deep into the contest.

And advancing rider split the two black, red, and white GSX-R1000s with ‘Tino crossing the line in 11th and Ultich 13th on the final lap.

Westby, Myers, Pietri, and Ulrich will be back in action and looking to improve on their Saturday showings in Sunday’s second half of the Infineon Raceway AMA Pro doubleheader.

In 2012, Team Hammer, Inc. is competing in its 32nd consecutive racing season and marks its sixth year of offering technical and logistical support through its Contract Services Department. AURORA, Ill. (May 5, 2012) – After a wildly successful debut last year, the Monster Energy Cup will return to Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium on October 20, and Director of Supercross Dave Prater is working closely with 15-time AMA National Champion Ricky Carmichael to design an all-new track for 2012 that will challenge both the professional racers as well as the amateurs.

“The Monster Energy Cup will have an all-new track this year,” said Prater. “The track is completely different than supercross. Last year we had a 120’ jump inside the stadium, and a 110’ jump on the outside of the stadium. Ricky [Carmichael] has a bunch of new ideas for this year, and he will once again be in charge of designing the Monster Energy Cup track”

The 2012 Monster Energy Cup features an all-new track design inspired by five-time Supercross Class Champion Ricky Carmichael. The Carmichael-inspired track design will consist of supercross and motocross obstacles unlike any other racetrack design in the world. More than 200’ of the track will be built into the grandstands, and the riders exit the stadium and race through the Monster Energy Fan Zone outside of the stadium and through the pit area before they catapult back into the stadium. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse with the winner walking away with a $100,000 check, and any rider that wins all three Main Events will take home $1 million.
