This cover of the American Motorcycling (now called American Motorcyclist) illustrates just how big network television coverage of an AMA National was in those days. This issue covers the 1961 Laconia Road Race National. The magazine nearly emphasizes CBS’s coverage as much as the actual racing. This was in the days of most people only having four stations to choose from on their “TV sets”, so having CBS coverage was huge for the series.
Also clicking on this link will take you to Google Books and the digitized version of the American Motorcyclist. This is a fantastic resource for motorcycle history research, but I’m guessing a lot of just motorcycle enthusiasts will enjoy going through and reading about the heroes of the past and checking out the motorcycles and riding fashions of the day. Even the old ads are fun to read.
At Google Books if you go to the left column, click on “About this magazine” and you’ll be able to scroll through years of American Motorcyclist issues, organized by decade. The magazine always has been, and continues to be, a wonderful chronicler of our sport. One warning – if you haven’t checked out American Motorcyclist on Google Books you may get absorbed in reading and before you know it lose a half a day.
