The Western/Eastern Roadracers’ Association Formula USA National Series was highly competitive during the 1990 season. Coming into Memphis, six different riders had won the seven series races. Ironically, series points leader Mike Smith was not among those. Smith led large portions of many of the races, but had always come up short at the checkered flag. During the Labor Day Weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park, Smith finally tasted the thrill of victory, by winning his first Formula USA event.

Smith who qualified on the pole, led from start to finish on his Valvoline Suzuki GSXR1100 Superbike. Floridian rider Donald Jacks had his best finish of the season finishing in second, 3.3 seconds behind Smith. Pocono winner Kurt Hall, shook off a stubborn Rich Oliver to finish third, making it a Suzuki sweep of the top three finishers.

Smith, of Canton, Georgia, talked about being relieved to finally win a race, “I feel like a great weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I didn’t worry about anybody else’s practice or qualifying times, I decided to just concentrate on doing the best job I could.”

Despite not winning until September that year, Smith went on to win the 1990 Formula USA Championship.

I found this old qualifing news release today. It’s a fun look back 20 years ago in AMA road racing.

LTD Racing's effort will be backed by Yamaha Extended Services.

LTD Racing's effort will be backed by Yamaha Extended Services.

Marietta, GA — LTD Racing will return for a third season in AMA Pro competition for 2011, this time backed by Yamaha Extended Services. The team dedicated to developing young talent will field a three-rider team, highlighted by a jump to the Daytona SportBike class in addition to their SuperSport assault.  Huntley Nash, Tomas Puerta, and David Gaviria will race for LTD Racing in 2011.

Huntley Nash will join the Daytona SportBike class after a breakthrough 2010 that saw him win three races, lead extensively in three others, and earn second place in the East point standings.

Nash upped his game significantly last year to become a contender. His wins at Laguna Seca, Elkhart Lake, and Barber Motorsports Park highlighted his transformation and he finished second or third an additional 12 times. Nash finished on the podium at nine of ten AMA Pro events in 2010. The 18 year-old hopes to take that momentum into the ultra-competitive Daytona SportBike class this year.

“Last year was a really good year for us,” said Nash. “We were able to be competitive and push for podiums and wins and I was able to get better as a racer. The time was right to make the switch to Daytona SportBike and it will be a tough, new challenge for us but we couldn’t be happier about it. We’re happy to have Y.E.S. on board as well as our other sponsors and partners and looking forward to getting started at Daytona.”

Talented Colombian Tomas Puerta returns to LTD Racing and will compete in SuperSport East. Puerta was consistently fast in 2010, earning the top five in 10 of 12 races to earn third in SuperSport East points. This season, Puerta enters the year as a contender to take the East SuperSport crown. “I have been working hard all winter to get ready for the season and I am glad to be working with LTD Racing again. I think we are going to have a good season together.”

David Gaviria will compete with LTD Racing in 2011. The Colombian came to the US to race last season and impressed as he became familiar with racing in the US. “I want to say thank you to LTD Racing for the opportunity,” said Gaviria, 25. “I’m going to give 110% for each race, and now that I know most of the tracks I can be faster than last year. Also with this team that has great bikes and mechanics, I will be more confident.”

As LTD Racing has done in the past, the team will also field other riders at selected races, including Sam Nash at Daytona.

Gary Medley will return as LTD’s Director of Racing. “We had a good year last year with Huntley and Joey (Pascarella) winning six races combined and Tomas and Jake (Gagne) getting on the podium. The team as a whole was able to get some good results and it is always important with young riders to keep progressing and learning more at every race.,” he said. “This year is a new challenge and we’re glad to have backing from Y.E.S.”

“Huntley will race in Daytona SportBike and we think he’s ready. Since I have been working with Huntley, he’s really impressed me with his determination. There are a lot of riders who say they want to be successful pros but Huntley has continuously improved his training and honed his craft to get better. Even when he was up front last year, he kept pushing to get better and wasn’t satisfied. That’s what it takes in my opinion.”

“Tomas did a good job the last two seasons and this year will be the season for him to start winning some races and challenge in the points. He’s a really talented young rider and good to work with and it’s time for him to take the next step,” said Medley. “We think he is ready.”

“David is new to the team and we raced against him last year in SuperSport, so we were able to see what he could do running his own bike and learning the tracks. We’ll work hard to help get him up to speed quickly and are looking forward to seeing what he can do.”

LTD Racing’s sponsors and technical partners are Yamaha, Y.E.S., Yamaha Powersports Generators, K-Tech, ESP, Vortex, K&N, Dynojet, Andrew Swenson, Graves Motorsports, Drippin’ Wet, Motul, Zero Gravity, and Galfer.

Former racing mechanic Marshall Rautmann was kind enough to send another batch of photos he snapped at the races back in the 1980s. I love this kind of stuff and I hope you enjoy them as well. Marshall tuned for some fast WERA riders back in the day such as Brian French, Dean Joas, David Klosterman, and John Eidenberger. Thanks again Marshall for letting us share these great photos.

AURORA, Ill, (March 8, 2011) – Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, heads to the Midwest this weekend with its tenth race from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., on Saturday night. Another dominating performance by Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto from Daytona combined with misfortune by San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart has led to a 23-point lead for Villopoto.

Media Day for this weekend’s race takes place on Thursday, March 10 from Noon-2:00, featuring GEICO Honda. Riders will be available for interviews and will ride the track for the media.

Last weekend, Stewart looked to be on the way to his fourth win of the season, but suffered a frightening crash out of the lead. As the former two-time champion attempted to re-enter the race, Villopoto took advantage, moving into the lead and pulling away for his second straight win and his season-leading fourth victory of the season.

“From the start of the race, I knew I wanted to ride my own pace,” said Villopoto. “No matter what happened, I wanted to be consistent and not make mistakes. James was riding fast right away, so I just had to wait to see if he would make a mistake.”

“It’s really good to gain a lot of points, but I’m not going to relax, added Villopoto. “I know that if I keep working at it, I will only be putting myself in a better position as the championship goes down to Las Vegas. I want to keep going after wins so I won’t be slacking off at all because of the 23 points.”

As for Stewart, after reentering the main event in last place, he soldiered on to work through the field and post a ninth-place finish, salvaging valuable points towards the championship and keeping himself within one race of his rival.

Villopoto was followed on the podium by TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Racing’s Chad Reed in second and Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey in third. Reed’s third straight podium effort brings him to within one point of Stewart for second in the standings while Dungey’s fourth consecutive finish of third or better has moved him into fourth, within 10 points of both Stewart and Reed.

In the Supercross Lites class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett became the third different winner in as many races in the Eastern Regional Supercross Lites class championship. The second-year rider grabbed the holeshot and led wire-to-wire for his first win for the Pro Circuit team.

“Winning my first heat race was really big for my confidence,” said Baggett. “I have been working on my starts because I haven’t really been known for being a good starter. I knew that it would be important because the start was short. We’ve been putting in the hard work and it feels great to finally see it pay off.”

“I won’t be happy until I have the points lead, so we just need to keep plugging away at it,” exclaimed Baggett. “I know I am capable of being there every weekend. I think I have my starts figured out and it can only get better from here.”

After wins by GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson to open the championship, Baggett’s triumph has led to a three-rider battle atop the standings. At Daytona, Barcia kept his podium streak intact, finishing second to Baggett despite a pair of broken bones in his wrist and moving into sole possession of the points lead. Meanwhile, Wilson suffered from his worst outing of the season, experiencing a bad start and several bouts of misfortune en route to an eighth-place finish. DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha’s Ryan Sipes rounded out the podium.

Barcia’s lead over Baggett, who assumed the runner-up position in the standings after his win, stands at four points while Wilson sits in third, and additional five points behind.

Last year in Indianapolis, Villopoto captured a hard-fought victory after a troublesome evening forced him into the LCQ to qualify for the main event. In the Supercross Lites action, eventual Eastern Regional champion Christophe Pourcel took the win.

Tickets are available at the Lucas Oil Stadium Box Office, SupercrossOnline.com, all Ticketmaster Outlets, charge by phone at (800) 745-3000, or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Practice and qualifying begins at 12:30 p.m., and the main event begins at 7:00 p.m. VIP tickets are available for $75 Adult/Child (VIP Experience includes one (1) ticket to the event and a private autograph session with the top riders from 3:00PM – 4:00PM the day of the show); Club Level $45 Adult/Child; Gold Circle $35 Adult/Child; Mid Level $25 Adult/Child; Treadhead $10 Adult/Child.
